Welcome to the home of 3d x-ray tattoos, We are not the first to do this unique new style but decided to make it accessible to tattoo artists and tattoo collectors world wide. This site was put together by the founders of Tattoo Training Academy, a family of six tattoo artists trained in the master / apprentice tradition and are dedicated to promoting the tattoo industry in all its forms. Our special thanks to Zane Erskine who spent the time and effort developing the app to promote this art form.
3D X-Ray Tattoo App
What is an 3D X-Ray tattoo?
An X-ray Tattoo or sometimes called a 3D x-ray tattoo is a tattoo that has a secret of second image embedded in the image or tattoo, the second image is less obvious and hidden from view. This hidden image is revealed by viewing the tattoo with the “x-ray tattoo viewer” app available on the app store.
- 3D Tattoos: These are tattoos that are designed to give an illusion of three-dimensionality on the skin. They typically involve shading and perspective techniques to create an effect that tricks the eye into perceiving depth.
- X-ray Tattoos: These are tattoos that are designed to mimic the appearance of X-ray images. For example, some people might get tattoos of bones or skeletal structures to look like they were viewed through an X-ray machine.
- Bioluminescent or UV Tattoos: Sometimes, tattoos can be made with ink that is visible only under specific kinds of light, such as ultraviolet (UV) light. While not directly related to X-rays, these tattoos can have a certain “hidden” or “revealed” quality that some people might associate with X-ray imaging.
How do x-ray tattoos work?
3D x-ray tattoos are no different from ordinary tattoos except the tattoo artist with particular attention to detail carefully incorporates red and blue or cyan colored ink into the design.
These different colors are seen differently under different filter media, however today we all carry phones that can behave as a portable filter to view these amazing new tattoo designs.
What are the best colors to use to get the 3d x-ray tattoo effect?
What is a good 3d x-ray tattoo?
A good x-ray tattoo is a design that hides the hidden image so well that it is not clear what is hidden until the tattoo is viewed with the x-ray tattoo app. This achieved buy making the dominant image having more red and the hidden image a light blue.

How do I design a x-ray tattoo?
The simplest way is to use the “X-RAY TATTOO” app from the play-store or you can do it yourself as follows:-
An x-ray tattoo can be generated in most graphic software packages like photoshop.
The design will need 3 layers. a red layer, cyan layer and a black layer
The Red Layer of x-ray tattoos
The red layer is any detail of the main image that does not form part of the hidden image and is tattooed in cyan or red or crimson ink
The Cyan / Blue / Green Layer of x-ray tattoos
The cyan layer is any detail of the hidden image that does not form part of the main image and is tattooed in cyan or light blue ink
The Black and Grey Layer of x-ray tattoos
Any part of the tattoo that is visible in both the main and hidden image is tattooed in a black and grey format as needed
Bioluminescent tattoos
Like 3D x-ray tattoos, Bioluminescent tattoos, have grown in popularity, also known as UV tattoos or blacklight tattoos, due to their unique feature of glowing under UV or blacklight. They provide a unique visual appeal and an element of surprise, revealing an almost secret form of body art only visible under specific lighting conditions.
A UV tattoo is created using a special ink that is mostly transparent under natural light but glows brightly under UV light. The effect is similar to certain substances like tonic water or white paper that fluoresces under a blacklight.
UV tattoos can be a standalone design, or they can complement a standard tattoo by adding glowing highlights. The latter is a subtle way to enhance a traditional tattoo without altering the original design noticeably in natural light. When viewed under UV light, however, the tattoo transforms, offering a glowing, dynamic version of the artwork.
Despite the novelty and aesthetic appeal, UV tattoos come with potential concerns. Firstly, the UV ink used has been a subject of debate in the tattoo industry. UV tattoo ink is a relatively new development and hasn’t been studied extensively. Its long-term effects on the body remain largely unknown. Some people have reported adverse reactions to the ink, including blistering, itching, or infection. Thus, anyone considering a UV tattoo should be aware of these risks.
Secondly, not all tattoo artists are experienced with UV tattoos. The UV ink has a different consistency than regular tattoo ink, and it requires particular care and skill to apply it correctly. If done improperly, the tattoo may not glow as expected, or it might even become visible in natural light. Therefore, it’s crucial to find an experienced artist if you’re considering a UV tattoo.
A crucial part of getting any tattoo, including UV tattoos, is aftercare. The process of healing a UV tattoo is similar to a traditional one. It includes keeping the tattoo clean, avoiding scratching, and staying out of the sun. Since UV tattoos are affected by UV light, it’s important to use sunblock once the tattoo has healed to maintain the brightness of the UV ink.
Finally, while UV tattoos might seem invisible in natural light, they’re not completely undetectable. Sometimes they might leave a faint scar-like mark or appear slightly raised on the skin. This is something to consider for those seeking a truly invisible tattoo.
In conclusion, UV tattoos offer an innovative and striking form of body art that glows under blacklight. They can be used as standalone pieces or as enhancements to traditional tattoos. Despite their unique aesthetic appeal, potential health risks and long-term effects associated with the UV ink should be thoroughly researched and considered before deciding to get one. It’s also essential to choose an experienced artist and follow proper aftercare to ensure the best possible result.
